Für die Kirchengeschichtsdidaktik ist die Behandlung der mittelalterlichen Kreuzzüge eine große Herausforderung. Über sie scheinen wir eine Menge zu wissen: religiöser Fanatismus und Grausamkeiten. Aber wie war es wirklich? Was versteht man heute unter dem Stichwort "Kreuzzug"? Und vor allem, wie kann man sie zum Gegenstand eines angemessenen Lernlandschaft machen? Aber kann gefragt werden, in welcher Weise die Kreuzzugsvorstellung heute noch eine Bedeutung haben? An dieser Stelle kann man an das Wort des amerikanischen Präsidenten Georg W. Bush denken, der von einem Kreuzzug gegen den Terror sprach. Auch wenn die meisten Kreuzzüge über 800 Jahre zurückliegen, sind sie nicht vergessen.
