Der Empirist W.V.O. Quine ist einer der Klassiker der Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts; seine originellen Argumente haben auf die eine oder andere Weise ganz verschiedenen Diskussionen der gegenwärtigen Philosophie geprägt.

Wer Quines vielfältige Ideen zu Fragen wie z.B. „Was existiert?“, „Gibt es Bedeutungswahrheiten?“ oder „Was ist Philosophie?“ verstehen will, muss seine klassischen Aufsätze verstehen. Darauf zielt das Seminar ab. Wir werden vor allem Text aus Quines Aufsatzsammlung „From a Logical Point of View / Von einem Logischen Standpunkt aus“ diskutieren und uns dabei gehörig Zeit lassen

Wir lesen die Texte im englischen Original, aber mit begleitender Hilfe der Übersetzung in der zweisprachigen Reclam-Ausgabe. Zu den im Seminar verhandelten Kernaufsätzen enthält diese Textausgabe ausführliche Kommentare, der auch Anfängern Quines Überlegungen erschließen sollte.
