In der soziologischen Theorie herrscht weitgehend Einigkeit, dass das späte 18. Jahrhundert mit der industriellen Revolution und der französischen Revolution als eine Zeitenwende anzusehen ist, die weltgeschichtlich eine neue Epoche einleitet: die moderne Gesellschaft. Unterschiedlich wird hingegen beurteilt, was genau denn das spezifisch Moderne an der modernen Gesellschaft ausmacht. Im Seminar werden unterschiedliche Lösungsansätze dazu in den soziologischen Theorien erarbeitet und diskutiert – anhand von Texten etwa von Karl Marx, Werner Sombart, Max Weber, Georg Simmel, Karl Mannheim, Max Horkheimer/Th. W. Adorno, Niklas Luhmann, Hartmut Rosa und Zygmunt Bauman.
