Entgegen der Reihenfolge im Titel der Vorlesung soll zunächst die Theorie der Schule im Fokus stehen, da diese Institution und ihre Organisationsformen den Rahmen abgeben für das Kerngeschäft: den Unterricht. Fragen der Didaktik sind damit immer rückgebunden an die organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen, innerhalb derer Unterricht stattfindet. Dementsprechend soll von diesen allgemeinen Rahmenbedingungen (Schule) ausgegangen werden, bevor die Fragen nach der Lehre des Unterrichtens (eine der vielen Bedeutungen des Begriffs „Didaktik“) thematisiert werden.

Denn seit der Entstehung der Schule steht diese Form der Institutionalisierung öffentlicher Bildung immer auch zur Kritik: Sie sei in ihrer althergebrachten Form kinderfeindlich, antidemokratisch oder schlichtweg inhuman – so einige der älteren Vorwürfe. Schulentwicklung wird somit zum gesellschaftlichen Desiderat. Neuerdings scheinen die Schulreformen jedoch weniger an humanistischen Idealen – und somit auch die Kritik weniger an deren Unterbietung – orientiert als vielmehr an ihrer Ineffektivität und Ineffizienz als Lernanstalt.

Nach einer Einführung in die der Institution Schule in modernen Gesellschaften zugechriebenen gesellschaftlichen Funktionen, steuerungstheoretischen und organisationstheoretischen Grundlagen von Schulentwicklung sowie empirischen Untersuchungen zur Schulprogrammarbeit sollen anhand kontrastiver Fallbeispiele Bemühungen zur Schulentwicklung durch Schulprofilierung thematisiert werden.

Mit ihrer Wettbewerbsorientierung tangieren Maßnahmen zur Schulprofilierung immer auch Fragen der Bildungsgerechtigkeit, indem sie spezifische Selektionspraktiken hervorbringen. Hierdurch gerät die Frage danach in den Blick, mit welchem Bildungsanspruch man Schule und Unterricht betreibt.

Nachdem in den ersten Sitzungen durch die schultheoretischen Überlegungen der organisatorische Rahmen, in dem Unterricht in modernen Gesellschaften stattfindet, näher bestimmt wurde, folgen grundlegende Überlegungen zur Funktion von Didaktik mit einem Schwerpunkt auf der bildungstheoretisch fundierten kritisch-konstruktiven Didaktik.

Diese Veranstaltung wird in mehreren Studiengangsvarianten (Bildungswissenschaften, Unterrichtsfächer) verwendet.
Sie dürfen grundsätzlich die gleiche Veranstaltung (d.h. mit dem identischen Titel) nicht zwei Mal besuchen und auch nicht doppelt verwenden, das heißt: Sie müssen pro Studiengangsvariante eine andere Veranstaltung besuchen und die Leistung erbringen.

Studienleistungen:
Die Studienleistung wird semesterbegleitend durch Reflexionsaufgaben erbracht. In jeder Vorlesung kann eine kurze Reflexionsaufgabe schriftlich bearbeitet werden, die dann hochschuldidaktisch für weitere Diskussionen im Plenum sowie Rückmeldungen in der darauf folgenden Vorlesung dienen. Teilnehmende müssen mindestens 7 dieser Reflexionsaufgaben direkt im Anschluss an die Vorlesung abgeben. Eine dieser (mind.) 7 Reflexionsaufgaben kann durch das Absolvieren eines asynchronen Online-Angebots (Selstlernmodul) erbracht werden.
In Ausnahmefällen (bspw. Krankheit o.Ä.) kann bei einer fehlenden (Reflexions-)Leistung durch eine Übungsaufgabe mit offenen Fragen (kein multiple-choice!) nachträglich noch die Bestätigung der Studienleistung erworben werden.

(Unbenotete) Prüfungsleistungen:
Das Verfahren für (unbenotete) Prüfungsleistungen wird in der ersten Sitzung besprochen. Das Verfahren ist davon abhängig, wie viele Studierende in der Vorlesung entsprechend ihres Studiengangs eine (unbenotete) Prüfungsleistung in der Veranstaltung erwerben können.
