230567 Gothic Spaces (S) (WiSe 2026/2027)

The Gothic is certainly one of the most popular genres in both literature and media, generating a variety of spaces such as Arctic Gothic, Southern Gothic, Urban and Suburban Gothic, Space Gothic, and so forth. While the academic scholarship in the field of Gothic Studies provides us with a varied range of theoretical frameworks for such sub-genres individually, a general and all-encompassing epistemology of how these Gothic spaces take shape in the first place is still missing. This course intends to fill that gap and aims at mapping out an overview of Gothic spaces, especially in contemporary US-American cinema, which has played a significant role in cultural representation throughout the last decades.
