Kaum eine wissenschaftliche Theorie – mit Ausnahme vielleicht Einsteins Relativitätstheorie – hat einen derart ikonischen Status inne, wie Darwins Evolutionstheorie. Dies hängt damit im zusammen, dass Darwins Theorie nicht nur als wissenschaftlicher Gegenstand sondern vielmehr auch in ihrer Zeit als anschlussfähige Gesellschaftstheorie, kulturelle Ikone und politisches Paradigma konzeptualisiert werden konnte.
Im Seminar spüren wir den heterogenen sozialen und kulturellen Kontexten nach, in denen Darwin und seine wissenschaftliche Theorie wirkmacht entfalten konnten. Beispielsweise im Rahmen des sogenannten ‚Sozialdarwinismus‘, in religiösen Debatten oder auch im Kontext des Darwinismus-Streit des fin des siècle, aber auch im Bereich verschiedener nationalstaatlich-gesellschaftlicher und wissenschaftlicher Kulturen.
