Das Seminar bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die wichtigsten Werke Émile Durkheims, so etwa seine Studien über die soziale Arbeitsteilung, den Selbstmord und die elementaren Formen des religiösen Lebens sowie seine Regeln der soziologischen Methode. Dabei soll es nicht um eine rein philologische Aufarbeitung gehen. Vielmehr wird das Seminar die ungebrochene Relevanz seiner Konzepte – etwa mechanische und organische Solidarität, Kollektivbewusstsein, die verschiedenen Selbstmordtypen, logischer Konformismus, Kult des Individuums, soziale Tatsachen etc. – für die Analyse gegenwärtiger Phänomene erörtern.
