The seminar is devoted to studying methodological texts from key thinkers in the fledgling philosophy of science. Among the scientists and philosophers studied will be Bacon, Newton, Whewell, Mill, and Duhem. The seminar will pursue the gradual shift from inductivism to hypothetico-deductivism. The texts reflect changing attitudes toward the ability of science to acquire true knowledge and exhibits different views on the extent to which the system of knowledge is shaped by human activities. The conception of science and the methodological views in science have not changed to a lesser degree than the system of scientific knowledge itself.
