Bilder von historischen Ereignissen erfüllen nicht nur Mittel der politischen Repräsentation und der Memorialkultur, sie sind oft selbst Agenten im geschichtlichen Prozess, indem sie einen immer wieder abrufbaren, ikonischen Status erlangen können. Seit der italienischen Frührenaissance steht daher die „istoria“ im Mittelpunkt von bild- und gattungstheoretischen Überlegungen. Die Vorlesung geht von den Vorläufern und Anfängen der bildlichen Geschichtsdarstellung aus, fragt nach den verschiedenen Strategien der Re-Visualisierung geschichtlicher Ereignisse und nach ihren gesellschaftlich-politischen Funktionen.
