261064 David Hume's An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (S) (WiSe 2014/2015)

Contents, comment

David Hume philosophy has been extremely influential from the Enlightenment to the contemporary Empiricist tradition in the philosophy of science. For example, Kant credited Hume with waking him from his ‘dogmatic slumber’, while contemporary empiricists developed their model of scientific explanation in light of Hume’s sceptical considerations about the justification of induction. Hume’s ‘Enquiry’ contains the basic principles of his empiricist philosophy, his prominent deliberations about induction and causality, as well as part of his critique of religion. The seminar is intended as an introduction to Hume’s ideas, as well as to some very central philosophical questions.
The seminar will be held in English.
