Die Frage nach der gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung von Religion wird in der Soziologie kontrovers diskutiert. Während einige an der These vom Rückgang der Religion in der Moderne festhalten, sprechen andere umgekehrt von deren Beständigkeit oder Rückkehr. Doch welche Rolle weisen die großen Gesellschaftstheorien des Fachs der Religion in ihren Theoriegebäuden zu und inwieweit beeinflusst dies, was man in der Gesellschaft überhaupt an religiösen Dynamiken beobachten kann? Das Seminar geht solchen theoretischen Verortungen von Religion nach. Es erörtert dabei zugleich, inwieweit bestimmte historische Kontexte (etwa Europa vs. Amerika) die soziologische Reflexion über die Religion bis in die Begriffe hinein mitstrukturiert haben. Das Seminar liefert somit erstens eine Einführung in den gesellschaftstheoretischen Kanon, der seit den Klassikern stets in engem Zusammenhang mit religionssoziologischen Perspektiven stand. Es wirft dabei zweitens historisch und regional kontextualisierte Perspektiven auf die Religion in der Gesellschaft und verbindet damit drittens eine reflexive Perspektive auf den historischen Kontext soziologischer Theoriebildung.
