Thomas Manns Roman 'Doktor Faustus. Das Leben des deutschen Tonsetzers Adrian Leverkühn, erzählt von einem Freunde' entstand in den letzten Kriegs- und den ersten Nachkriegsjahren, 1947 wurde er erstmals veröffentlicht. Es ist ein epochaler Roman von einer fast überbordenden Komplexität, darin Goethes 'Faust' durchaus verwandt. Die Vorlesung will in den Roman einführen, beim Verstehen helfen, einordnende und weiterführende Hinweise geben. Weil es ansonsten wohl keinen Roman in der deutschen Literaturgeschichte gibt, der sich so intensiv auf die Musik bezieht, werde ich in dieser Vorlesung Unterstützung durch die Musikhochschule in Detmold erhalten.
Achtung: Zu dieser Vorlesung gehört eine Exkursion nach Vechta und nach Worpswede, die vom 13.-14. Juli 2017 stattfinden wird. In Vechta wurde Rolf Dieter Brinkmann 1940 geboren, dort befindet sich auch ein Teilnachlass, der uns durch Prof. Dr. Markus Fauser vorgestellt wird. Wenige Jahre nach Thomas Manns Tod (1955) beginnt Brinkmann zu schreiben - und so ganz anders. Das im Vergleich zu begreifen, wird auch für das Schreiben Thomas Manns aufschlussreich sein.
