Bourdieus Gesamtwerk ist durchzogen von einzelnen Auseinandersetzungen mit der bestehenden patriarchalen Geschlechterordnung. Doch erst in seinem Spätwerk Die männliche Herrschaft arbeitet Bourdieu seine Geschlechtertheorie aus. Nun erhält Geschlecht eine konstitutive Bedeutung für die Entstehung und Reproduktion gesellschaftlicher Ordnung. Diese wird als eine immer schon vergeschlechtlichte und vergeschlechtlichende Ordnung gefasst. Damit gibt Bourdieu seiner Gesellschaftstheorie am Ende insgesamt eine neu Wendung: Die Theorie männlicher Herrschaft wird unabdingbar für die Analyse bestehender bürgerlich-kapitalistischer Gesellschaften.
Im Laufe des Seminars soll anhand der Lektüre des gesamten Buches nach und nach rekonstruiert werden, wie Bourdieu zentrale Begriffe seiner Gesellschaftstheorie (symbolische Gewalt, Habitus, Körper) weiter ausarbeitet und systematisch Gesellschafts- und Geschlechtertheorie miteinander verschränkt.
