Humans are inherently social creatures, yet experiences of rejection, ranging from subtle social slights to overt ostracism, can inflict deep psychological pain and shape behavior, relationships, and well-being. In Theories of Social Rejection, students will explore foundational and contemporary perspectives on why rejection hurts, how individuals respond, and what factors moderate these processes. Through a combination of academic readings, in-class discussions, and four self-report surveys, students will take an internal journey to chart their own reactions to interpersonal slights over time. By the end of the term, students will be able to integrate empirical theory with personal insight in a reflective final report, developing both critical scholarship and self-awareness around social rejection and the pain it engenders.
