Für ein Verständnis der Zeit um 1800 sind Einblicke in die Ästhetik des Klassizismus unerlässlich: Kunst und Kultur erhalten in dieser historischen Phase einen bis dahin nicht gekannten Stellenwert. Ästhetik wird zum Erprobungsfeld gesellschaftlicher Utopien und Kunstwerke zum Gegenstand historischer Selbstverortung. Dabei wird die Wirkungsweise von Ästhetik neu gedacht.
Gerade in der Skulptur fand der Klassizismus zu seiner zentralen Kunstform. Die Vorlesung bietet einen Überblick über Künstler, Gattungen, Auseinandersetzungen und Lösungsansätze in der Skulptur des Klassizismus. Dabei geht es zum einen darum, einen Überblick über die Spannbreite dieser Kunstform zu vermitteln. Zum anderen sollen ausgewählte Kunstwerke vertiefend analysiert werden, um deren Komplexität auf exemplarische Weise zu erschließen.
Gedacht ist die Vorlesung vor allem als Einführung in die ganz eigenen Prinzipien einer Ästhetik, bei der die im späten 18. Jahrhundert entwickelten Ideale einer Autonomie von Kunstwerk und Betrachter mit besonderer Konsequenz umgesetzt wurden.
