250274 Negotiating Childhood: Aspects of growing up as a refugee (S) (WiSe 2025/2026)

Refugee children spend a part or often their entire childhood - facing severe restrictions of the most basic rights guaranteed to them by international human rights and humanitarian law, in particular by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The course "Negotiating Childhood: Aspects of Growing Up as a Refugee" offers an exploration into the lives of young refugees, delving into the unique challenges and experiences that shape their formative years. This subject is particularly pertinent in today's global context, where conflicts and crises continue to displace millions of people, many of whom are children. The course is designed to provide a comprehensive un-derstanding of the multifaceted nature of childhood within refugee contexts. It encompasses psychological, social, and educational dimensions, offering students a holistic view of the refugee experience. Through a combination of lectures, case stud-ies, novels and interactive sessions, the course aims to equip you with the knowledge and empathy required to support and advocate for young refugees effectively.
