Die Veranstaltung ist vor allem der Ausbildung der Mechanik im 17. Jahrhundert gewidmet. Sie schließt sich an die Vorlesung zum kopernikanischen Umbruch an, kann aber unabhängig von dieser besucht werden. Physikalische Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich. Im Zentrum steht der begriffliche und methodologische Wandel, der von der Vorstellung einer abgeschlossenen und von Zielen und Zwecken geprägten Welt zu einem offenen und von Ursachen bestimmten Universum führte. Inhaltlich stehen dabei Denkansätze zur Beschreibung und Erklärung von Bewegung im Mittelpunkt, sowie die dafür herangezogenen methodischen Mittel. Das 17. Jahrhundert ist die Zeit einer gewaltigen gedanklichen Umwälzung, die die Grundlage für die wissenschaftlich-technische Zivilisation der Moderne legte. Zusammen mit der Reformation des 16. Jahrhunderts und der Aufklärung des 18. Jahrhundert gehört die Wissenschaftliche Revolution des 17. Jahrhunderts zu den bestimmenden Merkmalen der europäischen Geistesgeschichte.
