Diese historische Orientierung gibt einen Überblick über die Geschichte der globalen Vernetzung Lateinamerikas im 20. Jahrhundert und nimmt damit aktuelle globalgeschichtliche Perspektiven auf. Unter Globalisierung werden politische, wirtschaftliche, gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Phänomene und Austauschprozesse verstanden, die Lateinamerika verändern haben und die aus Lateinamerika weltweite Veränderungen anstießen. Dadurch gibt die Veranstaltung zugleich einen Überblick über die Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts insgesamt und untersucht weltweite Machtbeziehungen. Themen sind u.a. internationale Organisationen, der Kalte Krieg, der Guerillakampf, Welthandel, Entwicklungspolitik, Musik, soziale Bewegungen, Migration, Urbanisierung und Sport.
