260036 Theory Change: The classic Debate: Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos, Feyerabend (GradS) (WiSe 2022/2023)

Contents, comment

Thomas Kuhn’s Structure of Scientific Revolutions appeared in 1962 and prompted a significant change in the agenda of philosophy of science. Kuhn’s intention was to engage with the history of science more intensively and to draw methodological lessons from patterns of theory change. Concepts such as theory change, scientific progress, scientific method and rationality became closely intertwined. Kuhn’s suggestions were taken up and critically discussed by scholars such as Popper, Lakatos, Feyerabend, and Laudan. This classic debate came to an end by exhaustion around the mid-1980s, but its major proponents still define the conceptual framework of what has come to be called “integrated history and philosophy of science.” One of its characteristics is to do philosophy of science in close interaction with empirical material and to dare to suggest large-scale generalizations about the scientific method. In these respects, the classic debate marks a counterpoint to much of present-day thinking in the history and philosophy of science.
