Was ist die Natur des menschlichen Geistes? Haben wir eine immaterielle Seele? Ist der Geist etwas ganz eigenständiges, das unabhängig vom Körper existiert? Oder ist es nur ein Programm, das vom Gehirn abgespielt wird? Ist der Geist vielleicht das Gehirn selbst?
Die Metaphysik des menschlichen Geistes gehört zu den hartnäckigsten und am meisten diskutierten Themen der Philosophiegeschichte. Wie verhalten sich der Geist und die materielle Welt zueinander? Sind sie unabhängig von einander? Sind sie das gleiche? Wie interagiert die Welt mit unserem mentalen Leben? Während lange Zeit der Dualismus als völlig offensichtliche Wahrheit verstanden wurde, haben die Naturwissenschaften in Kombination mit zeitgenössischer Philosophie dieses Bild mehr als nur ins Wanken gebracht. Die Argumente dafür und dagegen wollen wir in diesem Seminar kennenlernen und diskutieren.
Wir beginnen beim klassischen Substanzdualismus von Descartes. Im Verlauf des Semesters werden die Themen von Computertheorien des Geistes, Zombieargumente und Bewusstseinsforschung bis hin zu Panpsychismus reichen.

Dieses Seminar eignet sich als Einführung in die Philosophie des Geistes und benötigt keine Vorkenntnisse auf diesem Gebiet.
