New media such as the internet have since their coming into being been discussed as emancipatory or even revolutionary tools. In this seminar, we will discuss cyberspace as a transnational social space and as a space of knowledge production closely connected to the "offline"-world and the related power structures. We will get to know feminist and postcolonial approaches to cyberspace and examine how inequalities such as race and gender and several "digital divides" function in this social space and in specifically transnational contexts. We will also look at how different actors – ranging from feminist and anti-racist activists to right-wing populist parties– apply and use different online media for their respective agendas. One of the course requirements will be to write a "wiki" entry.
