Gewaltverzicht und Feindesliebe sind zentrale Motive christlicher Ethik, die im Laufe der Zeit immer wieder je aktuell interpretiert und in Beziehung zu realen Gewalterfahrungen gesetzt worden sind. Thema dieses Seminars ist einerseits ein ideengeschichtlicher Überblick über die wichtigsten Konzepte und Kontroversen christlicher Friedensethik, vor allem aber die Erörterung und Diskussion von aktuellen Herausforderungen zu "rechtserhaltenden" Gewaltformen, wie etwa humanitären Interventionen mit militärischen Mitteln, präventiven bzw. präemptiven Verteidungungskriegen (Bush-Doktrin) oder dem völkerrechtlichen Grundsatz der Schutzverantwortung (Responsibility to Protect).

Für einen vorbereitenden Überblick sind die einschlägigen Artikel aus der Theologischen Realenzyklopädie (TRE) zu empfehlen, insbesondere "Frieden" (Band 11, S. 599-646), "Krieg" (Band 20, S. 11-55) und "Gewalt/Gewaltlosigkeit" (Band 13, S. 168-184). Die Seminartexte werden in der ersten Sitzung vorgestellt.
