// “Wood in the Americas, 1750 to present - Tracing a Resource from the Solar to the Fossil - to a New Solar? - Age“ (S) (SoSe 2017)

Contents, comment

Which role did wood play as a resource and source of energy in North and Latin America since the end of the 18th century and how did it change through the emerging availability of fossil energy carriers (coal, oil)? And how did this process change the cultural perception and use of wood and forests in the Americas? In the Seminar “Wood in the Americas” we will hone in on these questions using historical sources and selected research literature from the field of environmental and economic history. Apart from working on the seminar’s subject you hence also receive an exemplary introduction into those two fields of history. We will be moving from the mid-eighteenth century and the rise of the Industrial Revolution in Europe to the somewhat later industrialization of both Americas to the present. By so doing, we will be touching on the subjects of “Holznot”, the conflicts about the rain forest in the Amazon, wood as a luxury good, the beginning of the environmental movement (mostly in the United States but also in Latin America) which, in part, rose from the perception of the overuse of forests.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

You will be required to hold a 20-30 min presentation based on sources and literature made available through the seminar. At the end of the semester you will write a Hausarbeit based on the seminar (and Historische Kontextualisierung); your presentation will serve as a preparation for the Hausarbeit.
