250194 Decolonizing Educational Research (S) (SoSe 2018)

Contents, comment

What does decolonization have to do with educational research, and how do we do this work in the German context? To address these questions we read Decolonizing Educational Research: From Ownership to Answerability by Leigh Patel. This book is supplemented with a few articles that address colonialism and empire in the German context, and how to engage in a decolonial approach to our work as education researchers in Germany.

This course provides theoretical and methodological training for graduate students who are interested in problematizing colonial approaches to research and seeking out transformational ways of engaging in educational research. Throughout this course we address questions of inequality, race, gender, sexuality, nation, and colonialisms. One class will be devoted to research methods training that will help you complete your assignment for this seminar. Your will have the option of including your assignment in an online, open-access collection on decolonizing educational research in Germany that will be authored by students in the class, and will serve as a resource for other students, faculty, and administrators.

Perfect English is not required! Familiarity with decolonial theory or experience conducting educational research is also not required. An ability to read and discuss academic texts in English and a willingness to engage even when you do not understand everything will produce the best results in this seminar. You should also know that while we will explore key concepts such as the social construction of race and the ongoing relevance of colonization, we will not debate the validity of these concepts. The seminar will be organized around principles of shared knowledge production and mutual accountability for sustaining a space that is conducive to collaborative analysis.
