300086 Global Social Rights (S) (WiSe 2018/2019)

In this seminar, students get introduced into the study of global social policy and governance through the lens of global social rights. For that purpose, we read and discuss theoretical approaches to the understanding and analysis of global social rights (including human rights, global governance, and international law approaches). Based on these different approaches, we study a number of different global actors (including international organisations and civil society organisations), and a number of different social rights such as the right to health, children’s rights or the right to development.
The schedule for the second half of the semester is open to suggestions for alternative examples, according to students’ interest. We will use the first session to discuss how the schedule can be adjusted depending on the specific needs and interests of the majority of students.
The literature is in English and all presentations and discussions are expected to be in English as well.

I hope for a diverse group of students in terms of nationality and disciplinary backgrounds, interested in global politics, human rights, social policy and the like. Frequent and active participation will be essential for making this seminar a rich academic exercise!
