220146 "Development" in Latin America: Theory and Practice (S) (SoSe 2017)

Contents, comment

Over the last sixty years, several definitions of development and the good life have been advanced with regard to Latin Amercian societies. World Bank and multilateral organizations, US governments, transnational business, scholars, and more recently the Chinese state and the governments of the new Latin American left: Many distinct actors put their weight behind specific notions of economic, social and human progress and how it should be brought about. In this course, we will review the most important definitions of development, sumaj kausay, and competing concepts, as well as the theory that justifies them. Wherever possible, we will also look at historic and ethnographic cases that yield evidence of the conditions and consequences of putting these concepts into political, legal, and economic practice.
