John Stuart Mill ist zwar nicht der „Erfinder“ des Utilitaris¬mus, noch hat er ihm (wie er selbst behauptete) seinen Namen verliehen, aber zweifellos ist seine Abhandlung Utilitarianism einer der Klassiker der utilitaristischen Moralphilosophie. Ziel des Seminars ist es, diesen ziemlich kurzen Text (je nach Ausgabe etwa 60-80 Seiten) im Original sorgfältig durchzuarbeiten, dadurch die Grundsätze der utilitaristischen Ethik kennen zu lernen und auf diesem Weg zugleich das Lesen englischer Texte einzuüben. Englischkenntnisse, die das übliche Schulniveau übersteigen, werden nicht vorausgesetzt, wohl aber die Bereit¬schaft, die zu besprechenden Textabschnitte zu den einzelnen Seminarsitzungen gründlich durchzulesen. Es gibt eine Reihe günstiger Ausgaben des Textes, die alle verwendet werden können. Die u.g. Ausgabe hat den Vorteil preiswert und zweisprachig zu sein.
