Mit den zunehmenden geografischen, historischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen im Laufe des 18. Jahrhunderts wurden viele bis dahin scheinbar fraglose Wahrheiten des christlichen Glauben zweifelhaft. Die Vernunft war nunmehr das Maß aller Dinge, aber auch die Theologie entdeckte sich und ihre Möglichkeiten neu.
