This seminar introduces students into the concepts, and different fields of social policies at the level of the European Union as a supranational organisation.
It then attempts to discuss current and future development of EU social policies in the context of three major crises having affected the EU substantially. These are the economic and financial crisis from 2008 onwards, the refugee crisis from 2015 onwards, and the current 'internal' crisis (particularly the Brexit).
In order to understand differences between the situation and positions of different EU member states, we discuss Germany compared to three other EU countries, Greece, Hungary and the UK.
Concluding we discuss possible future development in EU social policies.
The preparatory reading will be in English and may include secondary literature, as well as original documents, journal articles and other material such as films. The course language (lectures and presentations) will be in English as well. Therefore, a very good command of English is important for participating in the course.
I hope for a diverse group of students with different disciplinary and national backgrounds and international experience (to which I am happy to adjust the seminar plan, to some extent; and looking forward to meeting you in October!)
