„Einsam, armselig, ekelhaft, tierisch und kurz“, das ist das Leben des Menschen im Naturzustand. Soll dieser Zustand beendet werden, muss durch Vertrag eine allgemeine Gewalt eingesetzt werden, die das letzte Wort in allen Konfliktfällen hat: der mit absoluter Macht ausgestattete Souverän, der „Leviathan“.

Wie Hobbes staatliche Herrschaft „more geometrico“ begründet und gegen konkurrierende Machtansprüche verteidigt, soll in diesem Seminar untersucht werden: vorrangig anhand des 1651 erstmals erschienenen „Leviathan“, doch unter Berücksichtigung anderer Hobbesscher Werke wie „De Corpore“ und „De Cive“.

Wir werden uns mit Hilfe dieser Texte wichtigen Themen der europäischen Aufklärung widmen: Wie kann politische Autorität ohne religiöse Legitimation fundiert werden? Gibt es vorstaatliche moralische Normen, und welche Rolle spielt Moral im Staat? Welches Verhältnis soll die Politik zur Religion haben?

Es handelt sich um eine kooperative Veranstaltung mit aufeinander aufbauenden Inhalten, weshalb regelmäßige Teilnahme erforderlich ist. Die Studienleistung wird in Form eines Portfolios erbracht, bestehend aus drei Bearbeitungen je einer Frage zu Inhalten des Seminars. Diese Fragen werden ohne Nutzung elektronischer Geräte während der Seminarzeit beantwortet. Es ist nicht möglich, die Studienleistung außerhalb der Lehrveranstaltung zu erbringen.

Diese Veranstaltung kann als Handwerksseminar im Rahmen des Philosophischen Einstiegs gewählt werden.

Abschluss des ersten Studienjahres (beide Grundkurse, Philosophischer Einstieg und Philosophisches Schreiben), sofern Sie den Kurs nicht als Handwerksseminar besuchen.

Wir arbeiten mit folgender Ausgabe des „Leviathan“: Hobbes, Thomas, „Leviathan oder Stoff, Form und Gewalt eines kirchlichen und bürgerlichen Staates“, herausgegeben und eingeleitet von Iring Fetscher, übers. von Walter Euchner, Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp 2023 (Suhrkamp-Taschenbuch Wissenschaft; 462). Diese Ausgabe gibt es als E-Book in der Universitätsbibliothek: https://katalogplus.ub.uni-bielefeld.de/Record/990370076370206441?sid=93257575.

Vielen fällt es allerdings leichter, sich in einem gedruckten Buch als in PDF-Dateien zurechtzufinden. Zur Info, falls die Anschaffung des Buches für Sie finanziell in Frage kommen sollte: Die Suhrkamp-Ausgabe kostet ca. 24 €. Die Ausgabe im Reclam-Verlag ist zwar billiger, enthält aber nicht den vollständigen Text, und wenn Sie eine andere Ausgabe benutzen als die übrigen Studierenden im Seminar, ist es kompliziert, die jeweils behandelte Textstelle zu finden.
