261049 Explanation (S) (SoSe 2016)

Contents, comment

What is the most important aim of science? A popular philosophical answer is: “explaining to us the natural world”. Is explanation a goal for all of science? Is it the most important one? What exactly does or should a scientific explanation consist in? The debate about the nature of scientific explanation is among the most prominent topics in philosophy of science. It is an evergreen, because methodology and expectations intersect.
In this course, we will discuss classic positions in philosophy of science. As these are mainly oriented at physics, we will also have a look at differences to what explanation means and how it is achieved in other scientific disciplines, like psychology, history, or medicine.

The course will take place every second week in two slots of 90 minutes each (see the exact dates).
It will be in English language.

As a starting point, I recommend reading an encyclopedia article, like the one in the Stanford Encyclopedia.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
