Zahlen können, besonders in den Sozialwissenschaften, eine seltsame Wirkung auf den Rezipienten entfalten. Sachverhalte, die mit Zahlen untermauert werden können, wirken seriöser und glaubwürdiger. Doch nicht jede präsentierte Zahl spiegelt auch eine Tatsache wider.
Im Rahmen des Seminars werden wir uns zum einen anhand von ausgesuchten Beispielen aus Wissenschaft und Presse Irrtümer und bewusste Täuschungen ansehen, die bei der Anwendung von quantitativen Methoden der Sozialforschung passieren und zum anderen eine eigene Untersuchung durchführen und versuchen, diese Fallen zu umgehen.
Ziel der Veranstaltung ist, neben der Einführung in grundlegende quantitative (Auswertungs-)Methoden, die Hinführung zu einem mündigen Umgang mit Ergebnissen empirischer Forschung.

• Streuung und Varianz
• Kontingenzanalyse
• Korrelation und Kausalität
• Graphische Darstellung
• Formulierungen in Fragebögen
