In September 1939 the British Ministry of Information was founded, which controlled how news of the war was conveyed to the British public. It also coordinated the making of feature films that were supposed to support the war effort by disseminating British and Allied propaganda in entertainment form. The deployment of women in the Forces, the relations between the sexes during wartime and the conflicts that arose afterwards, when men returned from the fronts to their families and their jobs, were some of the recurring themes in these films. In this class, we will analyse some of these films to see how they negotiate the fundamental upheavals to family lives and gender roles during the war and after.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
