230638 Contemporary Culture: Horror, Memory and Ethics (BS) (WiSe 2015/2016)

We are going to discuss, in this course, images of destruction. Some of the questions we might discuss are: how can artistic beauty be constructed by images of horror and violence? What can explain the large amount of contemporary cultural production regarding social and individual horror, in which, very often, images of human bodies are impregnated by vulnerability, pain, suffering and death?
Film, literature, fine arts, media and internet are going to be examined. In a comparative perspective, the classes will analyze Brazilian Culture and European Culture. One of the main topics will be the memory of violence in the past, in other words, how can we tell stories of violence and destruction according to ethical perspectives.
