Robert Nozicks Anarchie, Staat, Utopia von 1974 ist ein moderner Klassiker und die wohl bekannteste Verteidigung einer libertären Position in der politischen Philosophie. Im ersten Teil des Buchs setzt sich Nozick mit dem Anarchismus auseinander. Er versucht zu zeigen, dass ein Minimalstaat, der das Leben und Eigentum seiner Bürger schützt, moralisch rechtfertigbar ist. Im zweiten Teil kritisiert Nozick Argumente für einen über den Minimalstaat hinausgehenden Staat, insbesondere Argumente, die auf einer Idee von Verteilungsgerechtigkeit beruhen. Im dritten Teil möchte Nozick plausibel machen, dass der Minimalstaat nicht nur der einzige rechtfertigbare Staat, sondern auch eine inspirierende Vision ist: eine Utopie im positiven Sinne.
