250125 Internationale Perspektiven auf inklusive Erziehung und Bildung in Europa und den USA - International perspectives on inclusive education in Europe and USA (BS) (WiSe 2015/2016)

Contents, comment

Inclusive Education is an internationally widely discussed topic. Support systems for students with special educational needs as well as for those who live in disadvantaging conditions differ from state to state. The UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) led to a dynamic development within the school systems, following Art. 24: “States Parties shall ensure that: a. Persons with disabilities are not excluded from the general education system on the basis of disability, and that children with disabilities are not excluded from free and compulsory primary education, or from secondary education, on the basis of disability; b. Persons with disabilities can access an inclusive, quality and free primary education and secondary education on an equal basis with others in the communities in which they live; (…) d. Persons with disabilities receive the support required, within the general education system, to facilitate their effective education”.
In this seminar, models and concepts of special needs and inclusive education in Europe and the USA will be examined and compared, referring to different aspects as the law, cultures, institutional structures, and pedagogical practices in schools and classrooms. Guest professor Justin Powell from the University of Luxembourg, Prof. for Sociology of Education, is an international expert in the field of interculturally comparative analyses of inclusive education and special education. He will conduct the seminar in cooperation with Birgit Lütje-Klose, Prof. for Special and Inclusive Education at the University of Bielefeld.
The seminar language is English and a good opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge in English academic language. For this reason, the general interest in reading English texts and discussing in English is necessary.
