Die französische Kunst des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts zeichnet sich durch ein spannungsvolles Verhältnis zu Fragen der Repräsentation aus: Einerseits steht die Kunst - etwa mit dem Schlossbauprojekt von Versailles, den Places Royales oder vielen Historiengemälden und Porträts der Akademie - im Dienste der herrscherlichen Repräsentation. Andererseits lassen sich in Werken vieler Maler (Nicolas Poussin, Philippe de Champaigne u.a.) Spuren einer grundlegenden Reflexion über die Voraussetzungen und Grenzen der bildlichen Repräsentation ausmachen. Die Vorlesung wird beiden Phänomenen nachgehen und sie als Leitfaden wählen, um die französische Kunst des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts vorzustellen.

Die Veranstaltung ist offen für alle interessierten Hörer/innen, insbesondere aber den Seminaren 220030 (Kunst und Kritik im Zeitalter der Aufklärung) sowie 220028 (Die Anfänge der Kunstkritik. Kunst und Öffentlichkeit im 18. Jahrhundert) als Historische Orientierung bzw. Kontextualisierung zugeordnet.

Die Veranstaltung ist als Vorlesung konzipiert. Sie wird in der Mitte und am Ende des Semesters von praktischen Übungsaufgaben begleitet, die den regelmäßigen Besuch der Vorlesung voraussetzen. Die Studierenden werden gebeten, ein bis drei Fragen zu einer der Vorlesungssitzung zu beantworten. Ihnen werden die Fragen zu zwei Sitzungen angeboten, aus denen sie eine Aufgabe auswählen können. Die Bearbeitung der Übungsaufgaben setzt den regelmäßigen Besuch der Vorlesung voraus.
