Im Seminar werden grundlegende Methoden der statistischen Datenanalyse erarbeitet und zur Beantwortung von Fragen nach den demokratischen Strukturen in Europa eingesetzt. Dazu sollen neben regressions- und varianzanalytischen Verfahren auch klassifizierende Verfahren wie die Faktorenanalyse behandelt werden. Datenbasis für die im Seminar durchgeführten Berechnungen ist der European Social Survey, eine Fragebogenstudie, die seit 2001 in mehr als 30 europäischen Ländern durchgeführt wird.
