This course examines the statistical modeling of discrete choices. Such choices occur, when decision makers decide between one out of a finite number of
alternatives. Examples exist in categorical choices like the mode of transport for the trip to the university. But also answers to survey questions are often given
on a scale (like rating in terms of school grades).
For such data sets there exists a rich set of models. The course discusses the main models proposed in the statistical literature. These models are mostly geared towards
panel situations wherein individual decision makers are observed for more than one choice occasion. In such cases the modeling focuses on representing the heterogeneity
of decision makers, both observed and unobserved.
The course is taught in English. It is based mostly on the book by Kenneth Train (https://eml.berkeley.edu/books/choice2.html).

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
