When we talk about anthropogenic or “human-made” climate change, we think of the present. The same applies to the science of global warming, which is the branch of climatology dedicated to the understanding of anthropogenic climate change. Conventional chronologies start with the discovery of the greenhouse effect in the nineteenth century. This, however, ignores a deeper history of idea that human activities can alter the earth's climate, which precedes modern debates by two centuries. Starting in the late seventeenth century, it became a key part of colonial discourse and politics. This is where we start in this seminar. Then we discus more recent debates and their theoretical implications for the study of history, as it has been argued that climate change revolutionizes our understanding of human history.
