Competencies

Non-official translation of the module descriptions. Only the German version is legally binding.

Students who wish to specialise in the field of literary/cultural studies and the history of globalisation and interdependence become able to independently develop a viable and relevant question for this research context following current research discussions in the compulsory elective module. They acquire the competence to independently analyse and contextualise a topic of global history or literary/cultural studies in the context of an epoch and subject. To this end, they are able to independently compile and critically assess a relevant material basis from sources and research literature. They are able to critically reflect on the relevance of the topic and the chosen research approach and present the results appropriately in oral and written form in terms of content, language and form.

Content of teaching

The module allows students to specialise in the field of literary and cultural studies as well as global and interdependence history. The module focuses on the dynamics and processes of social, economic, political and cultural interaction in contact zones as well as processes of globalisation, coloniality, decolonisation and dependency. Cultural communities, regions, nation states and localities are not considered in isolation, but are placed in a global context of interconnectedness. Local and regional topics are analysed using cultural studies and global history approaches.
The "Overview" course provides in-depth, problem-oriented contextual knowledge on the topic of the seminar and embeds it in a broader cultural studies and historical context. Recent works with relevance to the seminar topic will be discussed.
The research seminar deals with problems of current research and reflects on the associated methodological procedures. Practising the critical handling of sources and research literature is a central focus of the seminar.
The "Research Discourse" event is offered as a colloquium in which external and internal consultants give insights into their current research work through academic presentations. Regular active attendance at the colloquium broadens students' view of different research approaches and practices. By participating in the discussion, participants reflect on current research concepts and learn the rules and standards of academic communication.

Students can make suggestions for the topic and task of the seminar paper, which is issued by the supervising teaching staff, instructors, lecturers. The development of a relevant research question and the selection of a suitable material basis as well as an adequate methodology by the students are part of the examination. Students are advised by the teaching staff on the development of a term paper concept.
