Ursprünglich begann soziologische Theorie als Strukturtheorie, die den Entwicklungsgang menschlicher Geschichte strukturell beschreibt (Comte, Spencer). Seit Simmel, in Ansätzen bereits bei Marx, tauchte dann die Frage auf, wie sich „der Mensch“, sein Charakter, seine Mentalität, sein Verhalten im Wandel moderner Strukturen verändert. Diese Frage wird anhand von Texten von Friedrich Tenbruck, Niklas Luhmann, Peter Berger/Thomas Luckmann, Karl Marx, Georg Simmel, Max Weber, Stefan Kühl, Heinrich Popitz, Harald Welzer, Ulrich Beck, Hartmut Rosa und Jean Ehrenberg diskutiert werden. Auch ist zu fragen, wie „der Mensch“ jeweils theoretisch konzipiert wird und ob bzw. wie er theoretisch tragfähig konzipiert werden kann.
