261020 The Ethics and Epistemology of Epigenetics (GradS) (SoSe 2014)

Contents, comment

Epigenetics investigates, loosely speaking, all those causally relevant factors of heritable development which are not exclusively encoded in the DNA, but in the large apparatus that makes genetic information at all biologically relevant. The recent progresses in epigenetics, many of them pointing to an increase in complexity of the models involved, come at a time when genetic tests are sold at an affordable 99$, catering to a public that is strongly interested in health but poorly prepared to deal with complex concepts, such as probability, risk factors, and what is at all ‘normal’ and ‘healthy’. This course, which is taught in English, provides an overview of the current debates. It focuses on epistemological issues, among them the nature, reliability and the social embedding of epigenetic knowledge; ethical issues, among them how such knowledge is responsibly used by the individual and by society; and historical issues, among them several theoretical approaches advocated in the first decades of the 20th century before the reign of the new synthesis and when a more multi-faceted discourse about heredity existed that included epigenetic knowledge. Doing so the course understands the epigenetic paradigm as an interacting network of culture and nature, and investigates how the current transformations in the discourse about genetic – and epigenetic – responsibility may prompt a rethinking of, and challenges to, the relationship between body, environment and society.
