239970 NarcoCultures (S) (SoSe 2014)

Contents, comment

NarcoCulturas, NarracionesNarco, Narco Epics etc.

NarcoCultures, NarracionesNarco, Narco-Epics etc. like other denominations do not just reflect the recent and not no so recent academic preoccupation with the topic of narcotics. They also show the already existent and more visible cultural productions and imaginations related with drug trafficking and its violence. Starting with the premise that everything we want to call NarcoCultures/Culturas does represent a hemispheric problem of and challenge to the Americas as a spatial formation and therefore corresponds to the entanglements of actors, phenomena and practices at different levels. We will take a closer look at literature, film and other forms of visualization of this highly heterogeneous cultures. With this basic understanding, together we will focus on the self-consciousness of the hemispheric region accompanied by an attention on violence in the imagination of contemporary societies. In class we will face the narco-topic in discussions about narrations by Yuri Herrera, Daniel Sada, Sergio González Rodríguez (within a possible frame of Borderlands/La Frontera), Evelio Rosero, Laura Restrepo and the Escobar-case (within the international Colombian frame). We will also take up for discussions and presentations mass media productions like The Wire, Telenovelas and the recent documentary NarcoCulture on narcocorridos .
