Der europäische Ästhetizismus ist nicht einfach als eine Abkehr der Kunst von der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit zu verstehen, sondern vielmehr als eine spezifische antibürgerliche Reaktion auf die Ökonomisierung aller Lebensbereiche in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Behandelt werden lyrische, erzählende und poetologische Texte von Baudelaire, Gautier, Mallarmé, Huysmans, Swinburne, Pater, Rossetti, Ruskin, Wilde, d'Annunzio, George und Hofmannsthal sowie ausgewählte Werke der bildenden Kunst.
