Wissenschaft darf als das lernfreundlichste Funktionssystem der modernen Gesellschaft gelten. Dennoch ist es nicht einfach zu bestimmen, wann mit guten Gründen von einem „Lernen der Wissenschaft“ gesprochen werden kann. Lernt das Funktionssystem Wissenschaft schon, wenn ein Forscher eine neue Erkenntnis publiziert? Lernt Wissenschaft nur bei großen Durchbrüchen oder Revolutionen? Offensichtlich bedarf es zur Beantwortung dieser und ähnlicher Fragen eines soziologischen Lernbegriffs. Erst im Anschluss kann dann etwa nach lernfreundlichen Bedingungen für die Produktion neuer Erkenntnisse gefragt werden.
Fragen dieser Art berühren das Feld der Wissenschaftstheorie. Hierin befasst man sich nicht zuletzt damit, Kriterien zu entwickeln, die wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt erkennbar machen sollen. Daher werden im Seminar nicht nur soziologische Lerntheorien diskutiert, sondern auch Angebote aus der Wissenschaftstheorie.
