Although there is no universally agreed definition of what precisely constitutes a mixed language, these languages are usually seen as being distinct from other types of contact languages, such as pidgins and creoles. In this class we will thus look at different types of contact languages and language contact phenomena (e.g. code-switching) at a more general plane before looking at more specific cases of (extreme) language mixing. This may also involve the analysis of multilingual text production in literature, music, and elsewhere.
