The aim of the course is to introduce students to the sociology of organizations, a rich and diverse field with strong ties to several other disciplines such as anthropology, social psychol-ogy, organization and management studies, or political science. The course is organized around three core themes – rationality, structure, and boundaries – each of which has been subject to longstanding discussions and controversies: How (ir-)rational are organizations? What elements constitute the structure of organizations? Do organizations have boundaries – and if so, where are they located? Students will become acquainted with the diversity of an-swers given to these questions by discussing the required readings in class and by partici-pating in practical exercises.
