250445 Inclusive and exclusive educational practices: the triad Family, School, and State (BS) (SoSe 2023)

This course aims to develop students’ understanding of the roles played by families, schools, and governments when children with additional learning needs, e.g. deaf children or students with hearing impairments or autism, are included and/or excluded from education systems. Family beliefs and viewpoints, school factors and government policies and practices will be examined and reflected.
Students will be supported to compare and contrast both inclusive and exclusive education systems, as well as identify the drivers that underpin these systems. The course will focus on the situation in European countries as well as the USA regarding its inclusive and exclusive educational practices and the role family, school and government play in it. Opportunities for changing educational practices involving families, schools and governments will also be covered. Students will have the opportunity to read various texts, analyze those from different perspectives, reflect and discuss this in small groups and plenum session.
Please note that Federico Waitoller’s stay at Bielefeld University is mainly financed by the International Guest Lecturer Program and also in parts by the Faculty of Educational Science.
