Der Kurs behandelt die Massenmedien als Teilsystem der modernen Gesellschaft, und zwar im Vergleich mit anderen Teilsystemen wie Wirtschaft, Politik, Erziehung usw. Ein deutlicher Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Programmbereich der Nachrichten und der Berichterstattung sowie auf den dafür zuständigen Organisationen, darunter vor allem Tageszeitungen.
